September is “Senate Report on Cannabis Awareness Month”

September 4th, 2012 marked the 10-year anniversary of the landmark 2002 “Senate Report on Cannabis” [the committee unanimously recommended legalization] and NORML Canada is commemorating this anniversary with a campaign that includes a new website dedicated to making the findings in this report easily accessible to Canadians.

Recently, we’ve added a number of
statements made by Canadian politicians on cannabis policy to the website and we’re
looking for your help to add more statements to the collection.

*If you know of other Canadian politicians’ positions on cannabis policy, please us know. You can reply to this email, or use the contact form on the campaign website.

Visit the campaign website to see all the Senate Committee materials we have available and please get behind this effort to educate Canadians and to bring about a national, honest conversation about cannabis policy.

The “How You Can Help” page offers several suggestions for ways to participate.

Many Canadians mistakenly believe the issue of cannabis prohibition doesn’t concern them if they don’t consume cannabis, but this is truly an issue that all Canadians have a vested interest in…

“The continued prohibition of cannabis jeopardizes the health and well-being of Canadians much more than does the substance itself.”
– The report of the Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs, 2002

For Canada’s sake, tell someone you know that our current cannabis policy is causing great harm to our society!

Thank
you.

Here is a response we received from Senator Pierre Claude Nolin, the Chair of the 2000-2002 Senate Special Committee on Cannabis…

From: Nolin, Pierre-Claude

Subject: Re: Norml Canada – Senate Campaign – 10th Year Anniversary of Nolin report

Good morning John and to all of you,

First a word to thank NORML Canada for remembering the Committee’s efforts and the culmination in the release of the report. After a decade it is even more important for every Government to invest to understand, confront and control violence.

Recently in front of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee, Minister Toews declared that his main objective was to fight violence. He is was absolutely
right! A good example of the kind of violence he should understand, prepare to confront and control is happening actually in Central America – mainly Mexico and Guatemala. That type of extreme violence – more than 16,000 deaths in the last 12 month in Mexico and even proportionally more in Guatemala – is the direct consequence of the prohibition of illegal drugs in North America.

Considering our love for peace and stability we collectively should be investing in understanding, preparing and controlling such a nightmare.

Pierre Claude Nolin
senator
